AI is a daemon, not an oracle

I think most people use AI as an oracle. I use it as a daemon.

An oracle is something you consult. You ask it for answers, for direction, for what to make. And AI regresses to the mean, so it hands you the average of everything it has ever seen. That's why every AI design looks the same, and every AI strategy sounds the same. The critics are right about the slop. They're wrong about the cause.

The mean is not in the model. It is in the prompt that has nothing of you in it.

A daemon is different. I mean it in the old sense: a force that has a will, but is not omnipotent, and has no aim of its own. You don't consult a force like that. You harness it. The way you harness weather. The way you harness electricity. Nobody asks the current what to build.

I already know what I want to do. I'm just making the AI do it with me.

Everything I'm proud of making this year came from pointing it at my own material. My old blog posts. My methods. My taste, which I had to learn to teach it. The Brand Operating System. None of it is generic, because none of it started with the AI. The daemon did the execution. The ideas were the part that could not be downloaded.

And harnessing it is a craft. It took me a year. You learn how it reasons, where it drifts, where it breaks, and how to translate what you do into terms it can use.

So stop asking it what to make. Point it at your work.

The direction is the part you bring. It is the only part that was ever scarce.
